November State Board News

Reading  and math standards reviews begin

Committees have begun working on the required reviews of the Kansas curriculum standards for reading and mathematics.  In addition to updating the standards, committee members are to integrate both core content areas with career and technical education standards that focus on the 16 career clusters.

New standards lead to new assessments.  The State Board voted to maintain the current state assessment system until the reauthorization of ESEA is completed.  This will allow districts and schools to maintain their current instructional efforts and the state to have trend data over a longer period of time.

21st Century Learner and Environment profiles presented

To help Kansas schools shape teaching and learning to meet the needs of the 21st Century, drafts of two profiles have been created.  One looks at the learner, the other at the learning environment.  Each is organized around unifying themes.  In the full document, available in the November State Board materials, each theme is explained fully.
