About Read Across

The Cat (the one made famous by Dr. Seuss!) is always on the prowl for kids who are reading and ready to don the Cat's trademark red and white striped stovepipe hat to celebrate KNEA's Read Across America Day on March 2.

KNEA's literacy program focuses on the importance of reading to help children master basic skills. Read Across America encourages adults to "pick up a book and read with a child" on March 2, the birthday of the famous author Dr. Seuss.

As in past years, thousands of children, teenagers and adults are gearing up to make the 2009 reading extravaganza bolder, brassier, and bigger than ever.  Joining them will be folks like Governor Kathleen Sebelius, civic leaders, grandparents, celebrities and businesspeople.

"Just as KNEA's Read Across America has become a national tradition, our goal is for reading to become a national pastime," said KNEA President Blake West. "We appreciate every adult in Kansas who makes reading a high priority."Click here for a sampling of events planned for KNEA's Read Across America.

Kansas AG virtually reads across Kansas to 35,000 students!

Attorney General Steve Six virtually "Read Across Kansas" to more than 35,000 students in the sixth annual Cox Communications' Read Across America Web cast on March 2, 2009.  Elementary schools from Garden City to Iola and from Arkansas City to Topeka pre-registered to participate in this event to support the Kansas NEA's Read Across America program.

"If you've ever shared a book with a child, you know the joy and excitement this small but meaningful act can bring," said Six. "I encourage all adults to pick up a book and read with a child on Dr. Seuss' birthday, and throughout the year."

Attorney General Six read the Dr. Seuss book, "There's a Wocket in my Pocket!" to first graders at Whitson Elementary School in Topeka and via the Internet to schools statewide during the Web cast.  Pre-registered schools entered to win either a $1,000 grant for their school library or a collection of Dr. Seuss books.
