2010 Read Across Kansas - Grow Your BRAIN!

KNEA is encouraging everyone to "Grow Your Brain" and read! Aimed at raising awareness about the importance of reading, the state’s largest reading event will be March 2. Like the National Education Association's Read Across America activities, the Kansas event celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday by encouraging all adults "to pick up a book and read with a child."

“Every year, the imaginations of thousands of Kansas youngsters are ignited when they open up a good book,” said KNEA President Blake West.  “Reading expands horizons and fosters creativity.  Our reading campaign is not just about one hour or one day of reading, but a lifetime of good reading habits that will translate into academic success.”

To help "Grow Your Brain" by reading, KNEA sponsored a Letters About Literature Essay Contest in partnership with the Kansas Center for the BookWINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON!

Meanwhile, plans are underway for reading events to occur from border-to-border. Let us us know about your Read Across Kansas plans by pledging to participate . We'll add them to the listed activities.

About Read Across

The Cat (the one made famous by Dr. Seuss!) is always on the prowl for kids who are reading and ready to don the Cat's trademark red and white striped stovepipe hat to celebrate KNEA's Read Across America Day on March 2.

KNEA's literacy program focuses on the importance of reading to help children master basic skills. Read Across America encourages adults to "pick up a book and read with a child" on March 2, the birthday of the famous author Dr. Seuss.

Every year, thousands of children, teenagers and adults are gearing up to make the reading extravaganza bolder, brassier, and bigger than ever.  Joining them will be civic leaders, grandparents, celebrities and businesspeople.

"Just as KNEA's Read Across America has become a national tradition, our goal is for reading to become a national pastime," said KNEA President Blake West. "We appreciate every adult in Kansas who makes reading a high priority."
