KNEA Reading Contest

Teachers want students to read and write. To commemorate Read Across America in 2009, KNEA teachers want students to read aloud what they write.

Students will submit audio files containing the student reading an original essay.

To enter, students in grades 3-12 will write a personal letter to an author, living or deceased, from any genre:

  • fiction or nonfiction,
  • contemporary or classic
...explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves.

Contest Rules:

  • All Kansas public school students in grades three and up may enter.
  • All contest entries must be received by December 1, 2008 .
  • Audio files will be e-mailed to readingessays@knea.org .
  • Only electronic entries will be accepted . Audio files must be MP3 files.
    • Students or their helpers may use Audacity to record. It works well and is free.
  • The e-mail, with the audio file attached, must contain the letter read by the student, the student's name, address, parents' names, grade, school and current teacher.
  • When reading their essay, students must end the essay by saying their name, their school and the town in which they live.

Three winners will receive $50 gift certificates. Entries will be published on Web sites and distributed to statewide news media. Entries become the property of Kansas NEA.

KNEA is working with the Kansas Center for the Book  to promote reading and writing.

The KCFB is promoting the Letters About Literature Essay Contest.  Students are welcome to use the same essay they wrote for KNEA's Reading Contest and send it to the Letters About Literature Essay Contest. Essay winners will be announced in the spring. For details, go to www.kcfb.info

Entries, typed or handwritten, must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2008 and mailed to this address:
