Kansas educators join 10,000 colleagues from across the country to discuss pressing issues facing education

Stimulus funding, NCLB, dropout prevention on the agenda

Nearly 175 Kansas educators will join their colleagues from across the country to discuss issues facing their schools, their students and their profession during the National Education Association's 147th annual Representative Assembly (RA), July 3-6 in San Diego, Calif. (For a list of KNEA delegates, contact Communications Directory Cynthia Menzel )

Nearly 10,000 teachers and education support professionals will convene for the RA, the highest decision-making body within the over 3.2 million-member NEA. With nearly 10,000 delegates, the RA is also the world's largest democratic deliberative body.

Kansas' education leaders attending the annual meeting will be discussing some major issues facing public education today, including:

  • Stimulus funds and Kansas public education funding - Kansas is slated to receive $781 million in support for pre-K through postsecondary education as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the largest federal investment in education in history. As part of the funding, Kansas is scheduled to receive $367 million from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund-a critical component of ARRA-which will help avoid program cuts and mass layoffs in public education. But, the reality in some areas is that decision makers are grabbing dollars intended for schools for other purposes.
  • Preparing students with 21st Century Skills and strategies to meet the needs of every student.
  • Solving long term issues of teacher recruitment and retention in Kansas .  A significant portion of the teaching population either already is or will shortly be eligible for retirement.  When those persons actually DO retire, we must be sure to have a pipeline of highly qualified, caring new teachers ready to enter classrooms and a strong system of induction support so that they will not only survive but also thrive.
  • Reauthorization of No Child Left Behind - As the Obama administration begins turning its attention to ESEA/NCLB, educators continue to find the law fundamentally flawed and in need of much change before reauthorization. NEA believes that its "Positive Agenda for ESEA Reauthorization" is a blueprint.

Other Events

The RA is convened every July during the Annual Meeting. The first two days are devoted to discussions, conferences and exhibits. The highlight is the Representative Assembly itself. During this important event, delegates debate issues that impact American public education, elect top officers and set policy for the 3.2 million-member Association.

In conjunction with the Annual Meeting, we also host several pre-RA events, including:
