Governor announces devastating cuts to public schools

KNEA to legislators: STOP DIGGING!

Kansas NEA is doubling its efforts to do everything possible to help shore up schools in light of the most recent round of devastating cuts. We understand the governor is not responsible for the state's revenue circumstances.  The economic downturn and the Legislature's previous actions have resulted in cuts that cannot be allowed to stand.  The legislature can act positively to stop the bleeding.

KNEA President Blake has a message for state lawmakers as they head into the 2010 Legislative session. "We're in a hole. Stop digging."

"Part of the reason we're in this financial crisis is the irresponsible tax policy of state lawmakers who gave away billions in tax breaks and incentives," West said. "We cannot continue to cut our way out of this financial crisis."

KNEA demands state lawmakers agree to no tax cuts during this session. "No tax cuts, no tax incentives, no tax breaks. Period," West said. "We expect our state lawmakers to be good stewards. They must use common sense and not pass every tax break that is requested."

KNEA wants the lawmakers to roll back or restore the tax breaks. "If we stop the phase out of the corporate franchise tax, for example, the state would gain millions of dollars in additional revenue," West said.

West is calling on lawmakers to review all the tax exemptions and enact common sense tax policies. KNEA believes tax policies must provide a stable revenue stream to meet the needs of Kansans and bring back and create more Kansas jobs.

The latest cut of $36 million takes Kansas schools back to 2006 funding levels. (Click here for more) While costs have continued to climb, schools are reporting more at-risk students, more special needs students, and more families in turmoil.  There are more students in school and the addition of two, three or 10 more students in classrooms dramatically impacts student learning.

Meanwhile KNEA is providing support to local affiliates to make sure that the latest round of cuts are implemented in accordance with contracts, statutes, and most importantly, with the highest possible degree of collaboration from our members.

While these cuts are hurting students and families now, the cuts may be even greater next year.  The time to hold our legislators accountable is before they take more drastic action.  KNEA members: contact your UniServ Director for opportunities to be involved in this crucial effort.
