Picturing America

Application deadline is November 14

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is pleased to announce that Picturing America will be opening a second round for this initiative this year. Picturing America is a part of the NEH's We the People Program that seeks to encourage the learning and study of American history and culture.

Picturing America provides an innovative way for citizens of all ages to explore the history and character of America through some of our nation's greatest works of art. Picturing America is a free resource that can be readily used in every classroom and public library in the country. Images of people, places, and events illustrating American history give citizens everywhere a chance to better understand our country's past and its ideals.  These masterpieces open the viewer's eyes to America's rich history and culture while also providing an introduction to the broader world of the humanities.

Picturing America is available to all eligible public, private, parochial, and charter and home school consortia (K-12), as well as public libraries in the United States and its territories. These organizations will receive:
o         A set of 40 high-quality reproductions (approximately 24" x 36") of great American art
o         A teachers resource book

The application will allow for individual schools and school districts to apply in a simple online application. Over 26,000 schools and libraries awarded with this program in the first round of applications. Since Picturing America began accepting applications in mid-January 2008, many school districts, including New York City, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Washington, D.C., Miami, FL, Atlanta, GA, San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN, Anchorage, AL, and Dallas, TX, have signed up, among other smaller school districts.  Additionally, 20,000 Head Start Centers will receive Picturing America, which includes over two million children, parents, and teachers, and more than 4,000 public libraries.

Detailed instructions for submitting an online application can be found on the Picturing America Website (www.PicturingAmerica.neh.gov). Applications will be accepted from August 4 through November 14, 2008.
