Review: The slaves in Texas did not learn of their freedom until June 19, 1865, a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day has become a day of celebration for many African-Americans. E.B. Lewis' superb illustrations greatly enhance Angela Johnson's account of how a group of slaves reacts to the news that they are free. This thought-provoking book is outstanding in its simplicity.
