Kansas NEA provides an array of legal services to its members. The Association has made an unwavering commitment to protect the rights of Kansas teachers and improve the power of their collective voice as well as their individual rights. Kansas teachers and support personnel rights have been enlarged and/or created by the work of the legal services division in cooperation with other areas of the Association.
The legal services division includes three full time attorneys who have over 80 years experience representing members.
The division also manages the Educator Liability Insurance program, the Attorney Referral program, serves as liaison to the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, and the Resolutions Committee.
The attorneys represent hundreds of members each school year in a variety of employment matters, including contract enforcement, licensure, disability, retirement, suspension, dismissal, and unemployment issues. Their goal is to protect members rights as they work to make public schools great for every child. In addition the legal services staff works with the KNEA governmental staff on legislative matters and analyzes legislation that affects Kansas education.
