KNEA Vice President
Mark Farr is a science teacher on leave from Nickerson High School in the USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson School District. He is a resident of Nickerson, KS.
Mark Farr is a high school science and technology teacher on leave from Nickerson High School in the USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson School District and has been an active leader in his profession, school and local association. Within his school district Mark has served on the Professional Development Council for 17 years and chaired that committee for 15 years. Mr. Farr is one of the founding teachers of the Nickerson High After School Science Academy in which students participated in hands-on enrichment activities. He has also taught computer application classes for Hutchinson Community College and Cranford Business College. Farr's article, "Nickerson High School Physical Science After School Tutoring Program" was published in the Journal of Critical Inquiry Into Curriculum and Instruction. This article reviewed the after-school tutoring program Mark piloted and built to help struggling students succeed in physical science classes.
The Mid-continent Research for Education (McREL) selected Mark to participate in a two-year Secondary Science and Leadership Institute. He has been an active member of the Kansas Association of Teachers of Science, has been a mentor teacher, and is a member of the Wichita State University Phi Kappa Phi Chapter.
Mark earned an Associate of Arts degree from Hutchinson Community College and went on to Emporia State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary. He began his career teaching at Sterling Junior High School then moved to Nickerson High School teaching computer studies and science classes. Seeking to enhance his professional development Mark completed a Master of Education at Wichita State University in 1998.
Mark has served as President, Building Representative, Treasurer, and Chief Negotiator for EA 309, his local KNEA affiliate. At the state level, Mark was a member of the Kansas NEA Professional Development Council training cadre and is active in the Kansas NEA Political Action Committee. In 2006 he was elected to serve as a Director on the NEA Board of Directors and was appointed by the NEA President to serve on the NEA Employee Advocacy Committee. Prior to being elected Kansas NEA Vice President Mark served three years as KNEA Secretary-Treasurer.
While not working on behalf of Kansas NEA members, Mark is a Lieutenant with Reno County Fire District 3. He enjoys being part of the pit crew for his brother's race car team.
Mark lives in Nickerson, Kansas, with his wife Deb who is a school psychologist for the McPherson County Special Education Cooperative and long time Kansas NEA member. The Farrs enjoy traveling, remodeling their century-old house, and gardening.
