KNEA members can participate in national Teacher Town Hall.  It's important teachers like you participate, make your voice heard!

This weekend tune into NBC's second annual "Education Nation" Summit. The Summit convenes policymakers, elected officials, educators, parents, business leaders, and engaged citizens in a national discussion about the challenges and potential solutions spanning today's education landscape.  KNEA member Keil Hileman, DeSoto TA, will be highlighted during the summit.

Here's what's happening. Details on each is below.

Monday, Sept. 26 - NEA President Van Roekel's "Window on Great Teaching" Session with NBC News Today Show Anchor Ann Curry.  KNEA's Keil Hileman is featured during this program.

Setpt. 5 - Live Teacher Town Hall
NBC News will convene the largest gathering of teachers from across the country for the nationally televised "Teacher Town Hall" on Sunday, September 25th.  The event will be broadcast live on MSNBC at 1 p.m. Kansas time and will stream live on www.EducationNation.com/livewebcast. Hosted by Brian Williams, the educator-only forum will provide a unique and visible platform for educators from across the country to make their voices heard, brainstorm ideas and solutions for improving education in America, talk about what works in the classroom and discuss the challenges of today's education system.

NEA's Commission on Effective Teaching and Teachers Chair and NEA member Maddie Fennell will serve as one of the town hall panelists.  Ms. Fennell is a 4th grade teacher from Nebraska.

Hundreds of teachers will get together in-person at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City for the program.  Teachers from across the country are invited to join the conversation online.  How? A live chat during the Teacher Town Hall in the "Teachers' Lounge", EducationNation.com's teachers-only online forum. The Teachers' Lounge will open in early September to get the conversation started leading up to the Teacher Town Hall.

Sept. 25 - New Movie: The AmericanTeacher

The world premiere of The "American Teacher" film on Sunday is co-sponsored by NEA and AFT. This film that chronicles the stories of four teachers, who live and work in urban and rural areas of the country.  Narrated by Matt Damon, the documentary counteracts popular misconceptions about the teaching profession by showing, in a style of close-up realism, what teachers actually do and what their lives are really like-and how continued neglect of the profession may be jeopardizing the nation's future.   

NEA encourages local and state affiliates, as well as members, to consider hosting community-based screenings of the film  to be followed by a panel discussion or open forum on the important issue of teachers' working conditions (which translate to students' learning conditions). Sept 26 - Window on Great Teaching featuring NEA President and KNEA's Keil Hileman

NEA President Dennos Van Roekel's "Window on Great Teaching" Session is with NBC News Today Show Anchor Ann Curry.  This session will be streamed live starting on Monday, September 26 at 10:25 a.m. at www.EducationNation.com/livewebcast.  President Van Roekel will appear at 10:45 a.m.EST. The session will feature three classrooms around the country for a look at what effective teaching truly looks like.  Audience members will have the opportunity to go live into these classrooms and interact with the teachers and students. 

Keil HilemanNBC News selected KNEA member Keil Hileman's Classroom Museum to be showcased nationally at its 2011 Education Nation Summit in New York City on Monday, September 26. Keil teaches at Monticello Trails Middle School in DeSoto. Monticello Trails, will be one of three schools in the country to be featured LIVE at the education summit. Keil and his students will be part of a segment titled Classrooms In Action: A Window On Great Teaching.  NBC News will take a live look into Keil's classroom to see firsthand what effective teaching truly looks like. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will participate in a discussion about how and why these classrooms were selected and the overall power of great teaching.
