Kansas represented by 140 educators
NEA votes on teacher evaluation, school funding, priority schools
Delegates to the 2011 National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly (RA) adopted a Policy Statement on Teacher Evaluation and Accountability. Among those voting on the measure were 140 educators from Kansas. (see list below)
Over 9,000 educators from across the country attended the annual meeting and Representative Assembly, this year in Chicago. Like the Kansas NEA RA, delegates meet to discuss issues and vote on new business items and resolutions.
Disheartened with badly designed evaluation systems, NEA RA delegates believe it is crucial to demand greater responsibility for their profession. NEA's proposal on teacher evaluation calls for an overhaul of teacher evaluation and accountability systems. It also calls for NEA members to take responsibility for ensuring the development, implementation and enforcement of these high quality systems.
"As a result of this vote, NEA is in a better position to fight the attacks of special interests groups and 'reformists' who continue to unfairly target educators," said KNEA President Blake West. "The voice of teachers and educators must not be silenced or marginalized by people who don't have a clue what great teaching is," he added.
Delegates discussed and voted on school funding, especially recent cuts to education, validated the importance of standing together with parents and community members to defend public schools and set the policy for the NEA for the coming year. Keynote speakers included Vice President Joe Biden, educators from districts succeeding in NEA's Priority Schools program and the "Wisconsin 14," the state senators named the 2011 NEA Friend of Education who stalled Governor Scott Walker from passing anti-worker legislation under the guise of a budget bill.
Besides voting on business items, Kansas NEA delegates participated in pre-meeting professional conferences and heard a distinguished panel of leaders from the National School Board Association, Parent Teacher Association, and American Association of School Administrators. The leaders, joining with NEA President Dennis Van Roekel, said the message is clear: Stop bashing schools and teachers and focus on working as a team - teachers, administrators, local school boards, parents and communities all focused on creating great schools for every child, regardless of geography, wealth, race, or station in life.
Nearly 400 NEA volunteers also participated in NEA's Outreach to Teach. They gathered on June 28 to repair and refresh Charles Dawes Elementary, which serves 365 kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Evanston, Illinois, near Chicago
